Briton Jenson Button won the Formula One World Championship after finishing fifth in a scrappy race at Interlagos in Brazil won by Mark Webber.
Robert Kubica of BMW and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton also finished on the podium, the latter having started down in 17th.
The result saw Brawn claim the constructors' title, becoming the only team to take the crown in their first full season.
Title rival and Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello's fate was sealed after suffering a late puncture while being passed by Button's English compatriot Hamilton: he pitted and came home in eighth for a solitary point.
Button, who started 14th after a wet, disastrous qualifying session on Saturday, was on course to win the title regardless.
He resumed after his final pitstop in front of Heikki Kovalainen but was passed by the McLaren soon after; that would have seen him finish with 10 points more than Barrichello - the Brazilian was third - but tellingly Button has more race wins to his name.
However first pole sitter Barrichello was passed by Hamilton then the previous world champion's team-mate Kovalainen came in for a further stop to promote Button to sixth.
News of the puncture was relayed to Barrichello with nine laps remaining - and the pitstop scuppered any chance he had of a title victory in 2009 while Sebastian Vettel's fourth spot was not enough to keep him in the hunt either.
On a hot and humid afternoon Barrichello got away well followed by Webber while behind them chaos reigned: Force India's Adrian Sutil, Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Renault's Fernando Alonso all crashed out in a series of incidents.
Trulli and Sutil - who had been third on the grid - argued on the run-off area with the Italian the more furious despite the German seeming to have done nothing wrong in holding his racing line as the veteran tried to come past on the outside.
The safety car was deployed for four laps while Kovalainen, who had spun following contact with Vettel, left the pits at the end of lap one with the fuel hose attached - it sprayed fuel all over the following Ferrari of Kimi Raikonnen, who had suffered a broken front wing in an earlier coming together with Sutil, and the Prancing Horse car briefly caught fire.
The incident is the subject of a stewards' inquiry.
When racing resumed Button went on the charge, overtaking Renault's Romain Grosjean, Kazuki Nakajima of Williams and debutant Kamui Kobayashi of Toyota while Kubica moved past Nico Rosberg for third.
Barrichello set a series of fastest laps at the front and looked comfortable until the first round of stops. He had to come in early and rejoined in traffic, losing as much time on each lap as Button had while trying to get past Kobayashi, and Vettel rubbed salt in by passing him for eighth with Hamilton then immediately closing too.
Webber came out best, managing to resume in the lead ahead even of Button - who had yet to stop - while Barrichello saw Kubica pit from third and come back out ahead of him.
Rosberg retired with an engine issue while a few laps later his Williams colleague Nakajima crashed spectacularly after touching Kobayashi's rear wheels.
Nick Heidfeld then literally ran out of gas to end his participation and reduce the field to 14.
Webber spent the remainder of the race alone at the front, while all eyes focused on the battles behind him. Button was 14 seconds behind Barrichello with a third of the race to go, while heavy clouds rolled in, threatening rain which never materialised.
Barrichello pitted, his final planned stop, and was ahead of seventh-placed Hamilton while Button in fourth led Vettel with both drivers still to come in.
Button and his mechanics executed a smooth, clean pitstop to calm the nerves before his reemergence in front of Kovalainen and the late drama which ensued.
Raikkonen was sixth in his penultimate race for Ferrari, with Sebastien Buemi and Barrichello also in the top eight.
Kovalainen was ninth while the impressive Kobayashi passed a sleeping Giancarlo Fisichella in the other Ferrari for 10th, with Vitantonio Liuzzi of Force India, Grosjean and Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari completing the order.

今年101跨年晚會焰火大秀看來是安啦！不會斷炊了，最新的消息是已經成功入主101的頂新集團董事長魏應交今天(16日)首度表態，他說「跨年晚會，絕對不會讓外界失望」，而且還會研究擴大舉辦一個更五彩繽紛的倒數晚會。
頂新集團董事長魏應交表示，「我想跨年晚會各位不會失望，因為今年的跨年晚會，以往都是類似於台北的嘉年華會，也是台灣很重要的曝光機會，所以是一個嘉年華會，我們一定參與盛會，各位不會失望的。」
至於可不可看到頂新的logo在101大樓上頭？魏應交連說了兩次「不會！」，他表示，「從我們這次董事會成員，可以看到我們希望魏家的色彩越淡，由專業經理人來對101做出最大的貢獻。」
受到金融海嘯預算緊縮以及八八風災影響，先前觀光局明確表示不再贊助台北101的跨年煙火秀，其他贊助廠商也紛紛打退堂鼓，雖然101已經著手設計煙火內容，至10月上旬尚未找到贊助廠商，如果再找不到資助的情況下，今年底的跨年煙火秀恐怕得面臨停辦的命運。
台北市政府觀光傳播局長脫宗華說，101煙火秀對行銷台北有相當大的幫助，因此將全力協助台北101找到贊助廠商，讓跨年煙火秀得以再度綻放光芒，如今看來，今年101跨年晚會焰火大秀安啦！

競標南山人壽，合庫、一銀將為博智（Primus）助陣！儘管南山人壽標案花落誰家懸而未決，不過，博智持續鴨子划水進行布局，且籌資規劃大致底定。消息人士透露，籌資案將由合庫、一銀挑大樑，共同管理主辦上限等值於7億美元，約合新台幣230億元左右的聯貸案，擔保品將全數為南山人壽股票。
這件230億元的聯貸大案，若辦成，利率創下今年新高！知情人士指出，貸款利率以初級市場利率大幅加點400點，總利率水準逼近5％，堪稱是今年以來，國內聯貸圈利率最高的一檔聯貸案，因此吸引多家公民營、外銀業者，陸續「登記報名」，合庫、一銀兩家管理行的管理費用，更以加點180點計價，現在就等南山總部與金管會「開獎」。
本月初博智高層在財顧陪同下，低調密訪合庫決策高層，時隔近一個月，聯貸案大致底定；知情人士指出，倘若最後真是博智得標，在兩大行庫聯手合作下，資金馬上就能依南山總部的要求，隨時到位。
消息人士透露，博智以不超過總交易金額的35％為限，向銀行提出資金需求，最後合庫、一銀討論後決定，此聯貸案的上限為7億美元，其中資金能隨時到位的關鍵，是因為爭取時效，合庫、一銀決定先各包銷約120億元，為博智作pre-fund，讓博智能在限期內，如數繳清交易價金，之後將分別再找參貸銀行分攤包銷的額度。
以博智用不超過總金額35％為限籌組聯貸案推估，博智對南山人壽的出價約在20億美元左右，金融圈認為，博智目前出價最高，儘管面臨中信金的挑戰，應仍有勝算，金融圈也在期待博智得標後，能為聯貸圈帶來另一筆肥厚的生意。

財政部賦稅署副署長鄭義和表示，全年內地稅預估較預算數短徵1800億元。但若加計關稅，全年將短徵1990億元，創史上新高，且與財長李述德先前所言1400﹏1500億元有很大落差。
財政稅收慘兮兮，財政部大玩統計數字。針對外界批評稅收將短徵2000億元，李述德日前才信誓旦旦的說，今年全國稅收僅較預算數短徵1400﹏500億元。
不過，財部昨公布前九月賦稅統計時，強調李述德只是講「中央」短徵的部分。
鄭義和指出，內地稅有全國跟地方，全年中央預計短徵1470億元，如果含地方稅收，全國短徵1800多億元。
財政部官員私下表示，1800多億元也只算內地稅，如果再把關稅短徵的部分加進去，全年全國短徵1990億元。不僅是史上最大短徵，更與外界先前推估相當。
財部統計長林麗貞表示，全國賦稅收入累計前9月為1兆1996億元，預算達成率只有67.2％，較預算數短徵1937億元。

OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.
Nobel observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama woke up to the news a little before 6 a.m. EDT. The White House had no immediate comment on the announcement, which took the administration by surprise.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided not to inform Obama before the announcement because it didn't want to wake him up, committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said.
"Waking up a president in the middle of the night, this isn't really something you do," Jagland said.
The Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Jagland said.
Obama's election and foreign policy moves caused a dramatic improvement in the image of the U.S. around the world. A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush.
Still, the U.S. remains at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Congress has yet to pass a law reducing carbon emissions and there has been little significant reduction in global nuclear stockpiles since Obama took office.

Pacific tsunami warning cancelled
A Pacific tsunami warning issued following strong earthquakes off Vanuatu has been lifted, after only a tiny wave was generated.
The first quake with a magnitude of 7.8 was followed about an hour later by one of 7.1, the US Geological Survey said.
The first epicentre was 295km (180 miles) north-northwest of Vanuatu's largest island, Santo, at a depth of 35km (21.7 miles).
People had already begun to move to higher ground.

RBA emergency rate level lifted 25 basis points to 3.25 per cent.
The Reserve Bank of Australia today raised the official interest rate from its lowest-ever point, amid signs of a strong local recovery.
The move is in stark contrast to last year, when the RBA joined the rest of the world in slashing interest rates to confront a rapidly escalating global financial meltdown.
The dramatic action saw the official cash rate plunge to a 49-year low of 3 per cent.

Cabernet Sauvignon。
有一說法是: 這名字是因為他是Cabernet franc跟Sauvignon blanc雜交而得到的品種。
如果嫌繞口難念，可簡稱為Cabernet，果農或酒保常更簡單地稱為Cab。
Cabernet 可以說是釀酒葡萄中最複雜最豐富的一個品種。
它的果皮很厚，果粒是所有釀酒葡萄中最小的。
厚果皮跟小果粒帶來很豐富的化學物，
而葡萄酒最重要的就是這些決定氣味跟口味的化學物，
因此先天上， Cabernet這個品種本身的天賦資源就比其它種葡萄要高。
所以，如果一切得當，Cabernet是葡萄酒中最強烈、最飽滿、最複雜的酒，
是葡萄酒所能提供酒客最極致的感官享受。
現在一般公認，Cabernet不僅是紅酒之王，也是葡萄酒之王。
法國波爾多有所謂的五大酒莊，所釀的酒可說世界第一級。
其中四個，他們的紅酒便主要是用Cabernet釀的。
Cabernet Sauvignon的氣味主要是厚重濃郁的果香系或木香系或香料系。
其中最主要也幾乎都跑不掉的是黑醋栗(currant)或櫻桃或紫羅蘭的氣味，
另外視產區不同，可以有香草、李子、茴香、巧克力、檜木、皮革、橡木等味道。
然後入口時，十之八九會感覺到單寧酸(tannin)的那種特別的澀味還有一些的酸味。
這單寧酸可硬可軟、可濃可淡，Cabernet要釀好，最重要的就是要調治這單寧酸。
最佳狀況是單寧酸濃重深迴但卻又要溫厚華順，
所以那些好的Cabernet常常要在橡木桶裡至少躺上二三年(所以價錢才那麼貴)，
等單寧酸被馴服了一些些，不再那麼澀口割喉之後，才裝瓶拿出來賣。
剛出廠時，還常不是最佳品飲時機，通常五至十年後單寧酸才會變的圓渾融厚。大部份的酒廠都把Cabernet混上其他葡萄品種所釀的紅酒。如此一來，就可以沖銷一些Cabernet的濃厚單寧酸，也增加複雜感。法國波爾多地區(Bordeaux)，Cabernet 一般來說不會單獨釀成紅酒，常混合Merlot、Cabernet Franc、或Petit Verdot等其他紅葡萄酒。澳洲的Cabernet是混合Syrah。在加州，如果要標示成為Cabernet Sauvignon，則Cabernet至少須要佔75%。很多加州酒廠如Heitz、Caymus、Chateau Montelena非常有勇氣，願意與這單寧酸纏鬥，生產百分百的Cabernet Sauvignon。釀成的酒，好不好喝就得看釀造技術、陳年效果、與個人口感了。但不少加州酒廠成績相當好，可說是列入世界Cabernet第一流。
追溯卡Cabernet Sauvignon(簡稱CS)葡萄品種的最源頭，似乎已經不是最重要的事了。人們都說她的原鄉，來自法國西南的波爾多產區。性喜溫暖氣候的C.S.，也因為石礫土壤之優沃條件(排水性高)，得以發展出傲世的品質。尤其是西北區的美多克Medoc，東南區的格拉夫(Graves)，以及較東邊之Bergerac等，都可以發現大量種植的C.S.葡萄。

Rio de Janeiro has been chosen as the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games after an International Olympic Committee vote in Copenhagen.

The result came as a rebuff to US President Barack Obama and favourites Chicago.
IOC President Jacques Rogge announced the decision to give the Games to Rio after three rounds of voting which produced a landslide victory for the Brazilians in a final showdown with Madrid.
Chicago, despite a speech to the IOC by President Obama, who had put his credibility on the line by flying in to address the IOC just before the vote, went out as fourth and last in the first round of voting, one of the biggest shocks in an Olympic ballot.
Chicago had started as front-runners and most Olympic observers had expected the Obama factor - first lady Michelle Obama spent two days lobbying in Copenhagen and also addressed the IOC session - to be decisive.
The fourth candidate, Tokyo, were knocked out in the second ballot.
The Brazilian delegation at the Bella Convention Centre, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and football great Pele, cheered wildly, then broke down in tears of joy and began singing as they hugged each other and celebrated a momentous victory.
Lula's impassioned appeal to the IOC to stop its habit of awarding Olympics to Europe, North America and the Far East and give Brazil and South America a long overdue chance clearly touched the right buttons as did an appealing video display, showing beaches, mountains and a joyous people having fun.
Rio's Copacabana beach erupted in joy after the vote was announced, kicking off a carnival-style celebration in front of the big stage and screens broadcasting events from Denmark.
In the final round of voting by 98 eligible IOC members, Rio picked up more than two thirds, winning by 66 votes to Madrid's 32 with one abstention.
Madrid had led the first round by 28 votes to 26 for Rio with Tokyo on 22 and Chicago last on 18.
After Chicago's elimination, there was a strong switch to Rio in the second round, the Brazilians almost winning an outright majority, picking up 46 votes to 29 for Madrid and 20 for Tokyo.
Though the US President and his wife produced strong appeals in the day's first 45-minute presentation by Chicago, they were almost certainly undone by the emotional tugs provided by Lula and former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch for Madrid. Lula raised the emotional stakes in his speech.
"This is a continent that has never held the Games," he said. "It is time to address this imbalance. The opportunity is now to extend the Games to a new continent. It's an opportunity for an Olympics in a tropical country for the first time, to feel the warmth of our people, the exuberance of our culture and the sensation of our joy."
Even more emotionally, Samaranch, now 89, pulled powerfully at the heart-strings of members when he spoke for Madrid. "I know I am very near the end of my days," he said. "May I ask you to consider granting my country the honour and also the duty to organise the games in 2016?"
Obama's appearance, the first by a sitting US President at an IOC session, provoked huge interest from IOC members, even though they are used to being courted by major political figures.
Obama told the IOC: "I've come here today to urge you to choose Chicago for the same reason I chose Chicago nearly 25 years ago, the reason I fell in love with the city I still call home."
