The German, now 40 years old, retired from Formula One at the end of 2006 but all being well will make his comeback in Valencia next month.
"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," the Italian team said in a statement.
"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand Prix on August 23."
That race is one of the few Schumacher is unfamiliar with since the Spanish street circuit was added to the calendar only last season.
Schumacher's comeback for the reigning champions will be a huge boost for Formula One organisers as well as local fans, who could be without home hero Fernando Alonso after his Renault team were suspended for one race.
His comeback will be the first time McLaren's current world champion Lewis Hamilton, as well as Red Bull's title contender Sebastian Vettel, have raced against the man who dominated a decade.
Both Hamilton, 24, and 22-year-old German race winner Vettel - nicknamed 'Baby Schumi' by his compatriots - entered the sport after Schumacher had left the scene.
Ferrari contacted the German, who has taken part in occasional motorcycle races since he retired, after Brazilian Massa fractured his skull in an accident at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.
"I talked on the telephone with (team principal) Stefano Domenicali and (Ferrari president) Luca de Montezemolo this afternoon and we decided jointly that I'll start preparing to jump in for Felipe," Schumacher said on his website.
"Even though I completely wrapped up the subject of Formula One quite a while ago, due to my attachment to the team I cannot ignore this unfortunate situation. As a competitor, like I am, I'm looking forward to this challenge."
Schumacher is Formula One's most successful driver, with 91 wins and more titles and records than anyone else has ever achieved.
He won his first world title aged 25 with Benetton in 1994, by a single point from Britain's Damon Hill, and retained the title the following season before moving to Ferrari in 1996.
He won five straight titles from 2000, and his final tally of race wins far eclipsed the previous mark of 51 set by Frenchman Alain Prost.
Schumacher's return had looked doubtful earlier in the week when his manager Willi Weber was widely quoted as saying it was impossible.
"Michael will not sit in a car in Valencia, this is out of the question," he had said on Tuesday.
The retired champion was also said to be still recovering from a neck injury when he crashed his motorbike during tests in Spain in mid-February.

China says at least 156 dead in Uighur riots

URUMQI, China (AFP) - - China said Tuesday at least 156 people were killed when Muslim Uighurs rioted in the restive region of Xinjiang in some of the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit the country in decades.

The violence in the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday involved thousands of people and triggered an enormous security crackdown across Xinjiang, where Uighurs have long complained of repressive Chinese rule.
"People are staying inside, the best thing for you is to go back to your hotel, that will be safe," a businessman told AFP near Urumqi's bazaar district, the scene of much of the violence.
In a sign tensions were still running high, state media reported that police had dispersed more than 200 rioters on Monday evening as they gathered at the main mosque in Kashgar, a city in western Xinjiang on the ancient Silk Road.
Police believed people were "trying to organise more unrest" in other cities in the vast mountainous and desert region that borders Central Asia, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Xinhua said more than 700 people had been arrested for involvement in Sunday's riots, which authorities blamed on Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking people who have closer cultural links to regional neighbours than the Han Chinese.
Exiled Uighur groups accused Chinese security forces of over-reacting to peaceful protests and firing indiscriminately on crowds.
The deadly unrest drew attention around the world, with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon leading international calls for restraint, a sentiment echoed by Britain and the United States.
"We deeply regret the loss of life" in Urumqi, US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said. "We call on all sides for calm and restraint."
Citing police, Xinhua said early Tuesday the death toll had risen to 156, up from the previous figure of at least 140 dead and 828 injured.
"This seriously violent and criminal incident led to the injury and death to nearly 1,000 innocent people," China News Service quoted Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang region, as saying earlier.
"At present, the situation is still seriously complicated, Xinjiang will prevent the situation from spreading to other areas using the most powerful measures and methods, and will safeguard regional stability."
The government and state-run media have not given a full breakdown of the dead and injured.
Dramatic footage broadcast of the unrest by the state-run CCTV network showed men turning over a police car and smashing its windows, a woman being kicked as she lay on the ground and buses and other vehicles aflame.
Han Chinese businesspeople told AFP there were around 3,000 Uighur protesters, a figure repeated by exiled Uighur groups.
"The Uighurs attacked motorists with rocks," said one Han woman who saw the riot unfold from the 11th floor of a local hospital.
"They just attacked the Han people."
The Xinjiang regional government blamed Rebiya Kadeer, the Uighurs' leader living in exile in the United States, for orchestrating the unrest.
But Kadeer and other Uighur exiles blamed the Chinese authorities.
"They randomly fired on men and women," Asgar Can, vice-president of the World Uighur Congress -- the main international organisation representing the minority -- told AFP in Berlin.
"In addition, the police pooled their vehicles together in certain parts of the city and then began to run demonstrators over," Can said.
Alim Seytoff, general secretary of the Uighur American Association, told AFP in Washington the Uighurs were protesting over an ethnically charged brawl late last month at a factory in southern China that left two Uighurs dead.
Authorities in Urumqi deployed more than 20,000 police, troop and firefighters to quell the unrest, Xinhua said, quoting a police source.
Riot police and other security forces armed with machine guns and carrying shields were seen in Urumqi on Monday, preventing further protests, according to an AFP reporter here.
Truckloads of German Shepherd police dogs were also brought into Urumqi and large swathes of the Muslim quarter of the city were sealed off, the reporter said.
Police said a curfew in the city would be put in place from 8:00 pm local time.
Many of Xinjiang's roughly eight million Uighurs say they suffer political, cultural and religious persecution. Like in Tibet, they also complain about Han Chinese moving into the area in large numbers.
The unrest echoed deadly violence in Buddhist Tibet in March last year when Tibetans stormed through the streets of the region's capital, Lhasa, attacking Han Chinese in frustration at what they claimed was repressive Chinese rule.

MADRID (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo said on Monday he had fulfilled a "childhood dream" as he was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player before a record-setting capacity crowd of nearly 80,000 people at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
"I am very happy to be here," the 24-year-old Portuguese winger told cheering fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the Spanish capital after completing his long desired move to the club from Manchester United.

"For me it is the realization of a childhood dream, which was to play for Real Madrid. I never expected the stadium would be full just to see me. It is impressive," he added.
Club officials said the event had smashed the previous record for attendance at the unveiling of a footballer set in July 1984 when Diego Maradona was presented at Naples after signing from Barcelona before 75,000 people.
Real acquired the player from Manchester last month on a six-year deal worth 94 million euros (131 million dollars) and he will reportedly be paid 13 million euros each season, making him the most expensive player in the world.
Ronaldo, the 2008 FIFA world player of the year, said he was "proud" to be the world's best paid footballer and would do all he could to help the team win the Champions League.

While Ronaldo wanted to keep the number 7 which he used during his six years at Manchester, that number is already taken by Real captain Raul.
"Nine is a mythical number at the club. The numbers don't play. It is me who is going to play and I am going to play well," he said.
Ronaldo arrived in Madrid on Monday afternoon on a private flight from his native Portugal where he was on holiday to undergo medical tests before he was unveiled.
The head of Real's medical services, Carlos Diez, said Ronaldo was "in perfect condition" after the player underwent medical tests.
"His cardiac and lung capacity is extraordinary," he added.
Fans, many equipped with food and drinks to ease a lengthy wait, starting gathering at the stadium hours before the official presentation, which lasted about 30 minutes, got underway at 9 pm.
Real president Florentino Perez praised Ronaldo's "professionalism and talent" who is capable of taking the club to "the peak of world football".
Ronaldo will team up with Kaka, the 2007 FIFA world player, who signed with Real from AC Milan for 65 million euros from AC Milan in early June.
Kaka was officially unveiled on June 30 before 55,000 fans. He was the first big name who Perez signed since he returned in June for a second stint as president of Real.
Perez, who brought Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane to Real during his first term as the club's president between 2000 and 2006, is seeking to rebuild a squad which trailed arch rivals Barcelona last season by reviving his policy of signing football superstars.
Among Real's other signings is French striker Karim Benzema from Lyon and defender Raul Albiol, who joined from Spanish side Valencia.

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Michael Owen has joined English champions Manchester United on a two-year contract, the club announced here on Friday, in a remarkable turnaround for the injury-prone striker.
England forward Owen, 29, a free agent after his Newcastle contract expired last week, underwent a medical at a Manchester hospital on Friday before returning to United's Carrington training ground to complete the shock deal.
The move came after the only clubs interested in signing the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker appeared to be Stoke and Hull - both teams for whom staying in the Premier League is an achievement in itself.
Owen underwent an examination Thursday on the knee injury which sidelined him for much of his time at Newcastle.
Britain's newspapers Saturday could not decide if Owen's surprise move represented another canny swoop by Sir Alex Ferguson -- or a waste of money on an injury-prone player.
"He simply cannot sustain a run of games," the Daily Mail said. "He plays, he gets injured, as an ankle heals, a groin muscle rips. When he returns, a knee ligament goes."

But the Guardian hailed the signing of a "proven poacher" which Old Trafford had lacked since the days of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The paper also highlighted Ferguson's history of gambling on players such as Eric Cantona -- who ended up becoming an Old Trafford legend -- and Laurent Blanc.
The Daily Express thought Owen could be used "as a more than useful back-up striker to Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov and one whose presence buys Ferguson a bit of time while he develops young talents such as Federico Macheda".
Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright wrote in the Sun that Owen had seemed to "lose his desire" in recent years.
"He needed a kick up the backside and Alex Ferguson will provide that," Wright wrote. "He is going to United to salvage his career for club and country."
Ferguson, who has seen both Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez leave Old Trafford in the close season, insisted signing Owen did not represent a gamble on his part.
"Michael is a world-class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question," said Ferguson.
"Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."
It has been reported that Ferguson has signed a pay as you play deal with Owen, whose weekly wage at Newcastle was believed to have been as high as 120,000 pounds (197,000 dollars).
Owen, who scored just 10 goals for the Magpies as they were relegated from the Premier League last season, said he'd been as stunned as anyone by United's interest in him.
"I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me," Owen revealed.
"I agreed without a moment's thought. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands."
He added: "I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here.
"I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one.
"I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."
Owen joined Newcastle from Real Madrid in 2005 but his time at St James' Park was blighted by a litany of injuries, including foot, concussion, knee, thigh, groin, ankle and calf problems.
Former Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear, who had to quit the club last season because of heart problems, rarely enjoyed having a fully-fit Owen during his time with the north-east club.
But Kinnear, who made his name as a player in the 1960s with Tottenham, was in no doubt of Owen's quality.
"I like to think I played with one of the best strikers in the world in Jimmy Greaves and Michael has similar attributes," Kinnear told Sky Sports.
"He's a great pro, he's very dedicated, he's a really nice lad and I'm sure Alex will get the best out of him."

搶救江翠老樹，不要游泳池，拒絕停車場
自民國六十六年建校以來，由不及肩高而成長茁壯的校園老樹，陪伴江翠國中學子、老師及社區居民走過生活點滴，承載著無數人的成長記憶，而在板橋地區的都市綠地，登上高樓放眼望去，江翠國中老樹林即為其中一份綠意，如此的稀少與珍貴，不單是板橋人更是全台灣人的資產。
未料從九十六年起，僅僅少數幾個人密謀將此片樹林完全抺去，意圖「移植」至遠方「樹木銀行」，為什麼？因為原地將蓋起游泳池及地下二層停車場，理由是學生需要「游泳教育」與「社區停車位嚴重不足」。
學生需要游泳教育沒有人會反對，但學校是否必定需要一個游泳池？姑且不論鄰近現有兩處幾近經營困難的民間游泳池，可取得優惠條件讓學生上游泳課，根本問題在，學校是否有能力經營管理游泳池，有足夠的師資、救生員來維持例行運作？若委外經營不擔心落得割地又賠償的下場？
主事者聲稱社區停車位缺乏，至使車輛隨意停放，影響學生上下學安全，但根據調查，目前鄰近的公民營停車場卻有三百多個閒置空位，街道停車問題不在停車位多寡，而在民眾有無守法且停車需付成本的觀念。最令人無法接受的是，學校活動中心地下即有五十個停車位，若再加上預計闢建的二百四十三個停車位，一個國中校地底下竟然擁有將近三百個停車位，設計公司還在玩「社區總車輛數不變，其總污染量不變」的數字遊戲，難道如此集中的停車場，不會嚴重影響學校師生的健康；若不幸建案果真進行，學校師生不知將有幾年時間會在工程施作的聲響與震動中度過！
經過一群社區居民與退休老師努力奔走，教務會議亦表決「停止籌建案」，得到116票贊成、0票反對的結果後，台北縣政府原已做出緩辦決議，未料不超過一個月，又在施壓下行文學校工程必需「儘速辦理」，讓許多人一年多來的心血盡化烏有，甚至，主事者在社區說明會上一面倒的反對聲浪中，依然我行我素，置若罔聞！
雖然設計公司更改將老樹「以校園移植為優先考量」，事實上，環顧整個校園，何處有移植空間？主事者聲稱「移植後，還會種更好的。」更是空口白話，昧於事實。移植時，老樹被斷手斷腳，存活堪慮，即便幸運存活下來，需要再經多少年月長成眼前樹林濃鬱樣貌，學生無辜何處遮蔭？農業局辯稱老樹死亡廠商負責賠償，一棵三十餘年的生命，該計算價值多少？
當校長行禮如儀聲稱：「按照上級指示」，推動的縣議員(周勝考)拍胸脯保證：「我百分之百願意接受用選票來考驗」，面對孩子的提問，我們該如何自處？一位退休老師質疑，「生命教育」難道只是在教室「放放錄音帶」嗎？面對眼前一棵一棵的生命我們持何種態度、選擇何種行動時，所謂的生命教育何需多言！
